Richard C. Hunt, MD, FACEP, Director, Division of Injury Response, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Dr. Richard C. Hunt has been the director of the Division of Injury Response (DIR), National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (Injury Center) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since 2004. With twenty years experience in emergency medicine and acute injury care, Dr. Hunt brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this position.

As director of CDC’s Division of Injury Response, Dr. Hunt has elevated CDC’s work in emergency care to a new level. He has been integral to enhancing CDC’s emergency preparedness activities related to disaster and terrorism response, as well as fostering partnerships with the acute injury care community that are crucial in daily occurring and mass casualty events. Since joining CDC, Dr. Hunt has continued to lead efforts to improve emergency care and reduce injuries and injury-related deaths through evidence-based practices in field triage and trauma care nationally and internationally. In this position, he also guides research, surveillance, and educational activities on traumatic brain injury, alcohol screening and brief intervention, as well as programmatic activities conducted at over 30 state health department injury programs.

Prior to joining CDC, Dr. Hunt served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the State University of New York, Upstate Medical University at Syracuse from 1998-2004. He is also the past Chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Trauma Care and Injury Control Committee, and was the liaison to the American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma. He served as President of the National Association of EMS Physicians from 2001-2002, and was the founding President of Advocates for EMS from 2003-2004.
