As evident in the recent NYC Time Square bombing attempt, Hurricane Katrina, the West Warwick Station Night Club Fire in Rhode Island and more recent events, the United States faces a very real possibility of a catastrophic mass casualty and mass fatality incident occurring at any time, involving hundreds or thousands of victims.  Over the past decade, federal, state and local governments have made tremendous efforts to prepare for emergencies that can threaten the lives and health of our citizens. Stakeholders have developed and implemented preparedness plans to enhance surge capacity and increase available resources to meet the demand for healthcare services during a mass casualty event. However, even with such plans in place, much collaboration and preparation is still needed to effectively respond to events involving mass casualties and fatalities.

The MCI Management Conference will bring together federal, state, regional, community and health systems leaders from hospitals, public health and emergency management to address the critical aspects of planning to augment and enhance response during natural or manmade disasters involving mass casualties and fatalities. This program will provide an open forum for all stakeholders involved to share best practices and collaborate in their preparation for a mass casualty event.

“Surge Capacity Workshop”
Conducted by Len Singer, MD FACS, Medical Director, Healthcare Emergency Management, Boston University School of Medicine
